Over several weeks, we will learn more about various color theory combinations with hands on experience combining the colors together. Each week, we will focus on one color theory:
Monochromatic, Complementary, Analogous, Triadic, Split Complementary, and Tetradic, as well as look at various tones and shades. We will work on our chosen project, selecting colors together. The first week will be Monochromatic, so all the yarn that week will be various shades of the same hue! (e.g royal blue, light blue, and dark blue.)
We will start March 1 with the actual pattern!
Begin collecting your yarn now! Pick your Main color, and collect all your scraps! I’ll be using Green!
Required Supplies:
- A Color Wheel or sets of smaller color wheels
Buy a color wheel from your local craft store (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, JoAnn’s) or search “Color Wheels” on Amazon
You can make your own Color Wheel using this PDF that I created. You will need 10 little brads and 4 sheets of cardstock or paper. I would recommend laminating these as well, but it’s up to you.
you can purchase a set of these designer color wheels that I designed (It’s basically the same thing as the PDF above, but on thicker material. Game Crafter does have very long shipping times, so you might not get these in time.
2. A Pattern for your project.
We will be using Sharing is Caring by Shelly Husband. Go to Ravelry or Shelly's website and download it. I will have a few minor modifications, and I will teach you how to join the squares, and then we'll put a border in.
3. Yarn in various amounts and colors.
This is a great stash buster! DK or Worsted weight, or whatever yarn you need for your chosen pattern.
- Pick one main color. I recommend a Primary Color (Red, Yellow, or Blue, but a secondary color like orange, purple, or green would be okay too). You’ll need the most of this color. 2-4 skeins (or 300-500 grams) of this, or equivalent in scraps. It doesn’t need to be all the same dye-lot, or the same shade. Multiple smaller scraps in various shades of this main color will be fine. Its hard to tell you how much yarn you need because you’ll be doing different patterns!
- Pick a main Neutral Accent Color. These could be browns, white, black, or greys. These will be to separate each section of your project, or to join if you’re making motifs. You’ll probably need scraps or skeins equal to about 1 skein of yarn (100-200 grams).
- Various other scraps of all the other colors! I can’t tell you how much you’ll need. Part of this is up to you! Each week we’ll learn about the various color theories, and how to put it into practice compared to your main color. If you know what the commentary color is to your primary color, you’ll need more of that color than any others. (Blue/ Orange are complements, Red/Green, are as well, and Yellow/Purple.)
This will begin in March, so stay tuned for more information!
